OK, so the wife and I have been watching the reboot of Mystery Science Theater 3000. It’s not bad, but certainly doesn’t live up to the original. So, here are my thoughts…

The updated opener: Too long. Should have stuck to the original format of a short, nonsensical story instead of trying to justify the situation that the new host is in. Hell, in the original there was no good reason for Joel or Mike to be on the satellite of love except for the fact that their boss at Gizmotic didn’t like them.. hense the lyrics “But his boss didn’t like him, so he shot him in to spaaace”. The new opener makes Jonah into a hero of sorts, trying to rescue someone who broadcast a distress call. It just didn’t work for me.

The updated robots:

Crow T Robot now has legs? why..? I dont see the point in that.

Tom Servo.. mostly stayed the same expect he can now.. fly around the theater during the movies.. this is not funny or amusing, just annoying as hell.

The biggest disappointment is Gypsy, who got a new “voice chip”, so instead of a wacky falsetto, we get the voice acting of Rebecca Hanson.. which just doesn’t fit the character. ALSO, there’s too much Gypsy! The original focused on the host (Mike or Joel) and the robots Crow and Tom. Gypsy rarely made appearances. and WHAT THE HELL is Gypsy seen dropping down from the ceiling in the theater? she’s carrying a basket of some kind, but I don’t think they actually explain what it is.

The Crew

  • Jonah (Jonah Ray): Our new protagonist seems to be a suitable update to the role portrayed by Mike and Joel. I have no complaints here.
  • Max “TV’s Son of TV’s Frank” (Patton Oswalt) is the real star of the show, always funny and plays a great lovable loser type.
  • Kinga Forrester (Felicia Day) – OK, here’s where you’re going to hate me. As a nerd, I know it’s illegal for me to dislike something that Felicia does – but, she is too sweet and pretty to make this character work, and I just find her annoying. There, someone had to say it.

Also Featuring a slew of guest cameos of people who dock but dont actually board the satellite. The spots are ok, to really not necessary.

I think the thing that bothers me the most.. if you can believe this – the show is too well funded. One of the things that made the original fun is the fact that it was made on a shoestring budget, very reminiscent of the old, late night, horror movie shows with cheesy hosts. With an actual budget, it kinda makes it “too clean” and kind of looses his charm.
