Elysium

Year: 2013
Directed By: Neill Blomkamp

In the year 2154, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Delacourt, a government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in by any means they can. When unlucky Max is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that, if successful, will not only save his life but could bring equality to these polarized worlds. (Source: IMDB)

If there’s one thing, film maker, Neill Blomkamp does well, it’s Sci Fi with photo-realism. And this movie is visually stunning. Another thing he does well is bring social commentary into everything he does and crams it down your throat. With a baseball bat. Now, with that aside..

This is a good movie, I enjoyed it.. but I was also a bit insulted by it. This movie indicates that without the rich, the rest of us devolve into a 3rd world state, living in total squaller and unable to do anything for ourselves. We are completely helpless without the rich. We all live in perpetual poverty, and the only thing we can do is commit crime to try to get ahead. I’m insulted by that.

Perhaps I got it wrong, maybe that’s not what he’s saying..
