In the year 2047 a group of astronauts are sent to investigate and salvage the long lost starship “Event Horizon”. The ship disappeared mysteriously 7 years before on its maiden voyage and with its return comes even more mystery as the crew of the “Lewis and Clark” discover the real truth behind its disappearance and something even more terrifying. I love this movie. It has Horror, Sci-Fi, Gore, Blood, Tragedy, Suspence, Drama, what more could you ask for? Well, OK, it’s not perfect.. but in a time when horror movies meant some guy slashing up people with cleaver little one-liners, this movie stood out as one of the goriest sci-fi’s made to that date.

This is a Sci/Horror that I could actually see influenced by the Hellraiser franchise, in a lot of respects.. but the most compelling theory of all doesn’t involve another horror movie.

Is “Event Horizon” the sequel to Disney’s “The Black Hole (1979)”?

In the events of Disney’s 1979 classic “The Black Hole” a ship is sent out to study a Black Hole. Stabilized on the Event Horizon (The Edge of the Black Hole, a visible right of light), the USS Cygus’s crew has been killed and turned into humanoid androids to help run the ship while Captain Reinhardt attempts to discover a way through the singularity to see what’s on the other side. At the end of the movie, the ship does indeed pass through the Black Hole, and before the credits run, we see a Reinhardt being held by Maximillian, his psychotic robot assistant, surrounded by a sea of flames and mountains.. a vision of hell.

Now, fast-forward… A ship has re-appeared orbiting the planet of Neptune. The Event Horizon has a drive capable of opening a portal through space and time, traveling through another dimension to jump light-years away in an instant. During the events of this movie, it is clear that the dimension it traveled to.. is hell.

I really recommend watching both movies back to back.
