The Princess Bride is one of the all time classic family movies.

A kindly grandfather sits down with his ill grandson and reads him a story. The story is one that has been passed down from father to son for generations. As the grandfather reads the story, the action comes alive. The story is a classic tale of love and adventure as the beautiful Buttercup, engaged to the odious Prince Humperdinck, is kidnapped and held against her will in order to start a war, It is up to Westley (her childhood beau, now returned as the Dread Pirate Roberts) to save her. On the way he meets a thief and his hired helpers, an accomplished swordsman and a huge, super strong giant, both of whom become Westley’s companions in his quest.

This is one of the movies that Hollywood had better keep it’s grubby hands off of. It’s perfect in almost every detail.

  • The Hero: Westley is funny, witty, brave and dashing. Making all the girls swoon in their seats. Perhaps a bit cocky, but it only ads to his charm.
  • The Princess: Starts off as a bit of a bitch, to be honest, but you realize that she’s playing hard to get.. and get her, Westley does.
  • The Villain(s)
    • Prince Humperdinck: is a dick.
    • Count Rugen: is, perhaps, a bigger dick
    • The Albino: is.. well, ok, he’s not really a villain here, more of a henchman.
  • The Other Heroes, who started as dicks..
    • Inigo Montoya: You killed his father, prepare to die!  Inigo comes out as being the biggest star of this movie, with heart, bravery and valor. He seeks to avenge the death of his father.. and he must kill the six fingered man..
    • Fezzik: Oh.. My.. Gawd.. it’s ANDRE THE GIANT. Andre basically played himself here.. it was a giant, gentle and kind in real life.. there was no one else suited for this role, in demeanor or stature.
    • Viccini.. ok, he was a dick too. A small man of quick wit and dizzying logic. Rest well, Viccini..
  • The Magic!
    • Holy Shit. Billy Crystal and Carol Kane are legendary in their roles as Valerie and Miracle Max. They play off eachother so well.
      • It was said in interviews that director, Rob Reiner, had to leave the set during their scenes because he couldn’t contain his laughter.
  • The Impressive Clergyman.  I’m not kidding, that’s the name of the character.
    • Mawage. Mawage is wot bwings us togeder today. Mawage, that bwessed awangment, that dweam wifin a dweam…

The only thing that I would count as being a negative.. would be the ROUS’s (Rodents of Unusual Size) – which were, quite obviously, midgets in rat costumes.. But this is the 80’s we’re talking about and CGI had not been available in that capacity.

Grab your kids, set them infront of the TV, and watch this movie!!
